By Rachel ThomasJanuary 10, 2026

In the vast and vibrant world of Sonic the Hedgehog, fans have been treated to an extensive library of characters, each bringing their unique personality and abilities to the table. With the "Idéa neglected world" (IDW) comic series picking up where the classic Archie Sonic the Hedgehog series left off, a whole new era of Sonic characters has emerged. Let's take a spin through the world of IDW Sonic and explore the diverse cast that has captivated both new and longtime fans.

The IDW series has done an outstanding job of introducing new faces while also paying homage to the rich history of Sonic's supporting cast. From familiar faces like Miles "Tails" Prower and Knuckles the Echidna to brand-new characters like Zeta and Whisper the Wolf, there's a character for every Sonic fan to love.

Classic Characters in a New Light

One of the most exciting aspects of the IDW series is the fresh take on classic Sonic characters. Miles "Tails" Prower, Sonic's best friend and trusted ally, is still the clever and quirky fox he's always been. However, his character is explored in greater depth, revealing his struggles with confidence and ambitions beyond just helping Sonic save the day.

Knuckles the Echidna, the Sonic universe's resident tough guy, also receives a compelling new interpretation in the IDW series. While still a powerful fighter with a heart of gold, Knuckles is now portrayed as a more complex and introspective character, grappling with his own sense of duty and his place in the world.

Dr. Eggman's Renegade Army

In the IDW series, Dr. Eggman's chaotic antics take center stage, and with them comes an expanded look at his devoted (albeit eccentric) robot army. Characters like Metal Sonic, Shadow, and even the enigmatic Zavok play significant roles in the comics, each bringing their unique skills and personalities to the table.

Original IDW Characters

While the IDW series pays homage to iconic Sonic characters, it also introduces a wealth of original characters that have quickly become fan favorites. Whisper the Wolf, a mysterious and philosophical mercenary-for-hire, has captivated readers with her quiet strength and sharp wit.

Then there's Zeta, a once-powered-up mobian from the ancient past who now serves as a guardian of the timeline. With his unfinished business and powerful abilities, Zeta brings a unique perspective to the Sonic mythos, and his story arc has been a highlight of the IDW series thus far.

One standout addition is Jewel the Beetle, a powerful and charismatic leader who joins forces with Sonic and his friends to take on Dr. Eggman's schemes. Her strong-willed and compassionate nature has made her an instant fan favorite, and her storyline has added a rich new dimension to the Sonic universe.

Old Friends and New Faces
