Tired of worries about your book falling while reading it? A DIY book holder might just be the solution you've been looking for. Not only does it allow hands-free reading, but it also saves your book from unnecessary bends and folds. Let's dive into the world of book holders and explore how you can create one by yourself.

Book holders have traditionally been used in various settings like hospitals, cars, and even on beaches. They've found a new significance during pandemics when social distancing and hand hygiene became a priority. A book holder allows you to sit back and enjoy your favorite read without constantly touching the book, minimizing potential contact transmission.

Materials You'll Need

Creating a DIY book holder involves gathering some common materials that you might already have at home. Don't worry; you won't need any specialized or expensive tools. Here's a list of items you'll need:

  • Empty CD/DVD cases (4-5 preferably)
  • Hot glue gun
  • Hot glue sticks
  • Scissors
  • Empty cereal box or other sturdy cardboard (for base)
  • String or yarn

Create the Stand

Begin by disassembling the CD/DVD cases. You'll need the plastic trays for this project. If you prefer, you can also use empty food containers or other sturdy plastic trays.

Using hot glue, attach 2-3 CDs/DVDs together to form a compact stand. Make sure the holes in the trays align with each other. This step might be a bit tricky, so take your time and ensure the glue is properly cooled before adding more layers.

Add the Base

Next, create the base of your book holder using the sturdy cardboard from a cereal box or similar item. You'll need a rectangle large enough to fit the CD/DVD stand. Trace and cut out the rectangle, and then cut off a small portion from one long side to make a slight 'ledge' that will hold your book in place.

Apply hot glue along the 'ledge' edge, leaving a small portion unglued at either end to create a gap for the book to slide in. Attach the modified cardboard base to the CD/DVD stand.

Cushioning and Book Rest

Your DIY book holder is almost complete! However, adding some cushioning and book rest will make it more comfortable for both your book and you.

Cut a length of string or yarn, and secure it across the inner side of the CD/DVD stand using hot glue. This string will act as a 'ledge' to keep your book from slipping down. The length of the string should be slightly less than the width of the CD/DVD tray. Be careful not to glue it too tightly, as this could make it difficult to slide a book in and out.

Cushioning for Stability

For extra stability, consider adding some foam or a soft fabric to the underside of the base. You can cut pieces of foam to fit or use leftover fabric to create a soft pad that attaches to the base with hot glue. This will help your book holder stay in place, even on uneven surfaces.
