Brazil Flag History and Design

The Brazilian flag, of the national colors green and yellow, had its origins on a naval ship. During a revolution, in 1889, a group of sailors defied the imperial decree and unfurled a green and yellow banner. This iconic moment marked the beginning of Brazil's struggle for independence from the monarchy.

The current flag design was officially adopted on November 19, 1889. It consists of a green diamond-shaped lozenge on a field of sky blue, with a yellow circle bearing a green national coat of arms at its center. The green and yellow colors represent Brazil's two major cities - Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo - and symbolize House of Braganza, the Dynasty that historically ruled over Brazil.

Brazil Flag Symbolism

Each element of the Brazilian flag carries a deep symbolic meaning. The green of the lozenge signifies the land of Brazil, its forests, and the network of hills. The sky blue background represents the canopy of the sky. The yellow circle, which also forms a bend in the lozenge, represents the gold that exists in Brazilian soil.

The green belt within the circle represents the alliance between the House of Braganza and the people of Brazil. The national coat of arms features a traditional DSATION and a blue ribbon with the national motto 'Ordem e Progresso' (Order and Progress) - a philosophy adopted by Brazilian society and government.

Brazil Flag Evolution

The design of the Brazilian flag has gone through several iterations and modifications. In its initial versions, the green and yellow colors were represented horizontally. The design was later adapted with the addition of the green lozenge and blue background to better reflect Brazil's landscape and history.

The first officially recorded version of the current design was created by the painter Décio VitalBrazil, with improvements by designerRaymundo Teixeira Mendes. Despite changes in the flag's design, the colors green and yellow have remained constant, representing a thread of continuity and unity throughout Brazilian history.
