Mario & Yoshi Color Pages

Ever since the dawn of Super Mario Bros. in the 80s, Nintendo's iconic plumber has been accompanied by a cast of memorable characters. One of the most beloved among them is Yoshi, the green dinosaur with a tongue that's as long and useful as it is amusing. Yoshi's unique design and advanced AI have made him a indispensable ally in Mario's adventures, and his colorful appearance has inspired countless fan creations, including the popular "Color Page Mario Yoshi" fan art style.

Color Page Mario Yoshi, or CPMY for short, is a fan-made art style that takes Mario and Yoshi from their usual vibrant colors and simplifies them into a few basic tones, often featuring a single dominant color per character. This style, reminiscent of classic coloring books, has gained significant traction in the Nintendo fan community, spawning thousands of user-generated images, cosplay outfits, and even official merchandise.

Origin and Popularization of Color Page Mario Yoshi

The earliest known instances of CPMY appeared on Animé- and game-focused forums around 2010. Users would take screenshots from Super Mario 3D World or New Super Mario Bros. U and apply a simple color filter, turning Yoshi's myriad shades of green into a single hue and Mario's red into a flat, solid color. The results were surprisingly charming, and the trend quickly spread.

As social media platforms like Tumblr and Instagram gained traction, so did CPMY. Users began creating and sharing their own CPMY images, often paired with clever captions or witty references to Mario lore. Even Nintendo took notice, incorporating CPMY-inspired designs into the official Japanese Mario website and official merchandise. The style's popularity has only continued to grow, with countless fans creating and sharing their own CPMY interpretations.

CPMY Art Style Techniques

At its core, CPMY is a digital art style that simplifies characters into their most basic colors. There are no specific rules for creating CPMY art, but common techniques include using a single solid color to replace each character's default color, or applying a simple color gradient. Some artists go a step further, using colored outlines or distinct shading to create a more dynamic, dimensional effect.

Software-wise, CPMY can be created using virtually any graphic editing tool. Popular choices include Photoshop, GIMP, and even simple mobile apps like Paint3D. The process is straightforward: import an image of Mario and Yoshi, use the color selection tool to target the characters' colors, and then apply a new color of your choice. The background can be left as is or given a complementary color treatment for added impact.

Expanding the CPMY Universe

Beyond Mario and Yoshi, fans have begun applying the CPMY style to other Nintendo characters, turning Peach, Toad, and even Bowser into single-color simplifications. Some artists have even expanded the CPMY universe to include non-Nintendo franchises, with character crossovers and mashups becoming commonplace. This ongoing evolution of the CPMY style is a testament to its versatility and appeal.

CPMY in the Community and Beyond

The CPMY community has thrived online, with dedicated subreddits, Tumblr pages, and Twitter accounts. Artists share their work, provide tips and tutorials, and often collaborate on large-scale CPMY projects. This sense of community and shared purpose has helped maintain the popularity of CPMY art, even as trends come and go.

Nintendo, for their part, has embraced the CPMY phenomenon. They've incorporated the style into their official marketing materials and even released official CPMY merchandise. This support has not only validated the fan creations but also introduced the style to a wider audience, ensuring CPMY's legacy for years to come.

CPMY as a Gateway to Digital Art

For many, CPMY serves as a starting point in digital art. Its simple, intuitive nature makes it accessible to beginners, while its minimalist style encourages experimentation and creativity. It is not uncommon to see digital artists who got their start with CPMY move on to more complex art styles, carrying with them the foundational skills they honed creating CPMY pieces.

Furthermore, CPMY's accessibility has led to a wide range of interpretations, from simple, flat designs to complex, stylized pieces. Some artists even incorporate hand-drawn elements or traditional art techniques into their CPMY work, demonstrating the versatility and growth potential of the style.

As Mario and Yoshi continue their adventures, so too will their alter egos in the vibrant world of Color Page Mario Yoshi. Whether it's a simple filter applied to a screenshot or a complex digital masterpiece, every CPMY creation is a testament to the power of fandom, the joy of creation, and the enduring appeal of Nintendo's iconic duo. So, next time you see Mario and Yoshi, consider giving them a new look - you might just start your own CPMY journey.
