A Brief History of Big Ben

Since 1859, Big Ben has kept time over Westminster, its deep chimes signaling the passing hours to Londoners and visitors alike. The bell's nickname originated from the engineer Sir Benjamin Hall, known as "Big Ben" due to his large stature. Initially, the bell was named the "Great Bell," but the name Big Ben stuck and became cannon within the public realm.

During World War II, a bomb explosion severely damaged the tower, breaking a window pane and sending debris flying. However, Big Ben continued to chime, its unbroken rhythm a symbol of London's resilience. Today, it undergoes regular maintenance to preserve its function and appearance for future generations.
