Beetroot-DIY Lip Balm: Naturally Rosy Lips
Beetroot, beyond its vibrant color and taste, offers beneficial properties for the skin. Its high vitamin C content aids in collagen production, promoting skin elasticity, and its rich anthocyanins possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Excited to dive into this vibrant DIY project? Then let's embark on this journey to create your own beetroot-infused lip balm.
Assembling Your Ingredients
The first pit stop on our journey involves gathering your materials. Remember, the zest of your project lies in the eccentricity of beetroot, so guys, don't mistakenly snatch that can of red beets. We're talking about fresh, raw beetroots here.
Other essential ingredients include beeswax, cocoa butter, sweet almond oil, and essential oils for scent—lavender and orange being organic choices. Additionally, protect your skin and hands with gloves and verify if you're allergic to the ingredients using a skin patch test before you kickstart your DIY process.
Preparing the Beetroot
The vibrant beetroot is the pièce de résistance of your lip balm. Begin by washing and scrubbing your beetroot thoroughly. Trim off the leaves and the base to minimize the chance of cooking fibre into the oil.
Once cleaned, carefully peel the skin off. You can use a vegetable peeler for this. Place your beetroot in a small pot of water and simmer for 30-45 minutes, until tender. Allow it to cool before grating it—a grater with larger holes would work best.
Choosing the Oil Base
Selecting your oil base is a pivotal step. For a soft and smooth lip balm, sweet almond oil is an excellent pick. It's lightweight, non-greasy, and hydrating. It also has a mild scent that complements the earthy beetroot flavor impeccably.
Be cautious when selecting essential oils for fragrance. They These should be certified pure therapeutic-grade oils. Whilst a little drop goes a long way, avoid using too much to prevent skin irritation. My personal favorite combination is a blend of orange and lavender—it gives your lip balm an enticing, invigorating aroma.
Crafting Your Lip Balm
Now that you have gathered and prepped your ingredients, it's time to put those DIY hats on. You'll need a double boiler for melting your wax and butters and a Pyrex dish or glass measuring cup for holding your oils.
Create a water bath and boil the water in your double boiler. Meanwhile, combine your beeswax and cocoa butter in the double boiler and allow them to melt. Once melted, carefully stir in your grated beetroot, allowing it to fully infuse into the oil for around 45 minutes.
Infusing the Oils
After your beetroot has had its time to infuse, it's time for your sweet almond oil and essential oils to enter the mix. Pour the oil into the double boiler, stirring constantly until the mixture is well-blended. Remember, the more you stir, the more luxurious your lip balm's texture will become.
It might seem counterintuitive, but it's at this point where patience is your best ally. The heat will continue to infuse the color and scent from the beetroot into the oil. You can use this time to sanitize your lip balm containers, ensuring that your final product has a pristine, uncontaminated home.
Filtering and Pouring
Once everything looks like a vibrant, cohesive blend, it's time to work swiftly. Pour the mixture through a fine mesh strainer positioned on top of a bowl or clean teacup. Filter out the grated beetroot—all the goodness has been extracted.
Carefully pour the lip balm mixture into your prepared containers. Be cautious, hot oil can be tricky to handle. If you notice any air bubbles forming during the pouring process, you can gently poke them out with a toothpick or skewer.
With the lip balms now in their final slots, give them some time to cool down and solidify. It can take up to 24 hours for them to be completely ready. Stick them in your fridge for a speedier solidification if you're eager. Once they're solid, seal them with some cool and funky labels, and there you have it—DIY lip balm with a unique, healthy twist.
