Eiffel Tower Color Sheet: Free Printable Activity for Kids

The Eiffel Tower, a global icon and symbol of Paris, has captivated millions with its iron latticework and striking design. Central to this fascination is the tower's color, which has evolved over the years, reflecting its history and technological advancements. So, what exactly is the Eiffel Tower's color? Let's dive into the fascinating story behind the tower's paint job, from its origins to its current vibrant hue.

As the tallest structure in the world until 1930, the Eiffel Tower's design and color have drawn visitors from far and wide. But did you know that the tower was almost painted a different color during its early years?

The Birth of the Eiffel Tower: A Brown Beginning

The Eiffel Tower was completed in 1889 for the Exposition Universelle (World's Fair) held in Paris to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. Initially, it was covered in a reddish-brown color, referred to as 'venetian red.' This color was chosen for its robust, protective properties and to blend in with the Parisian landscape dominated by chestnut trees and brownstone buildings.

However, the tower's reddish hue didn't last for long. Over time, the color began to peel, exposing the underlying iron frame and making it susceptible to rust.

सेädt : The First Major Repaint

In 1900, ahead of the Paris World Fair, the tower received its first major repaint. The new color, a warm, earthy tone called 'сеädt' or 'shabby brown,' was applied to protect the metal from environmental damage. This color was made from iron oxide mixed with white lead and provided a better barrier against rust.

The 1900 repaint also marked the beginning of a practice that continues to this day: regular repainting of the Eiffel Tower. Since then, the tower has been repainted around 18 times, with each repainting providing valuable insights into its history and technological advancements.

The Eiffel Tower's Evolution: From Brown to Bronze

The tower's color continued to evolve, moving away from the warm brown tones to a more metallic hue. In 1951, the Eiffel Tower was painted in a deep bronze color, known as 'Dark Brown W sistex,' which gave it a more majestic appearance. This color was accompanied by a new technological innovation - a special paint that used a mixture of brass and copper dust to enhance the tower's reflecting properties.

The bronze color and its reflective properties allowed the Eiffel Tower to sparkle as it reflected the evening's lights, adding to its enchantment and providing an iconic nighttime view of the Paris skyline. This iconic illumination was officially installed in 1985 and is now a beloved tradition, with the tower sparkling for five minutes every hour after sunset.

The Present-Day Eiffel Tower: A Bright Bronze Hue

The Eiffel Tower you see today sports a vibrant bronze color that complements the tower's elegant design and reflects its rich history. This color, officially called 'Brun Isnatène' or 'Bronze Topaz,' is made up of seven different shades that vary in intensity, giving the tower a vivid, three-dimensional appearance.

The current repainting process, which takes around 18 months, involves a team of up to 25 painters and approximately 60 tons of paint. The painters work their way up the tower from the bottom, ensuring every inch is covered in the characteristic golden-brown color that has become synonymous with the Eiffel Tower.

The Eiffel Tower's Color and its Environmental Impact

As the Eiffel Tower's color has evolved, so have the concerns about its environmental impact. Modern paints, including those used on the tower, contain fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and are more eco-friendly than older pigments. Furthermore, the Eiffel Tower's current color helps reflect solar heat, contributing to a cooler urban environment.

But the tower's impact extends beyond climate control. The Eiffel Tower's vibrant bronze color has become a symbol of Paris and France worldwide, drawing millions of visitors each year and contributing to the country's economy.

The Eiffel Tower's Color: A Reflection of France's Spirit

The Eiffel Tower's color has mirrored the tower's evolution, from humble beginnings to an international icon. As with any great landmark, the Eiffel Tower's story continues, with each repainting freshening its legacy and reflecting France's resilience, innovation, and pride. Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of the Eiffel Tower's color is that it continues to captivate, providing a constant reminder of the beauty and power of human ingenuity.

If you ever find yourself in Paris, don't miss the chance to stand before the Eiffel Tower and marvel at its intricate design and vibrant color.
