Classic Sonic Characters

Beginning with the iconic 2D platformers on the SEGA Genesis, our speedy friend Sonic had a full roster of characters alongside him.

The first batch, however, were featured in 'Sonic the Hedgehog', the 1991 game that kickstarted a cultural phenomenon.

Dr. Eggman

Ah, the nefarious Dr. Eggman, otherwise known as Dr. Robotnik! He's been Sonic's arch-nemesis since day one. In his first appearance, he creates a new kind of robot - the 'ALL-kiev robots' - to stop our spiky hero in his tracks. Talk about a high stakes debut!

His first design was a departure from his future appearances, featuring a towering frame and a robotic overcoat. Not to forget, his devious laugh that has since become an iconic part of the series' underscore.

Tails

Our first meeting with Miles 'Tails' Prower came in the form of an eight-digit sidekick in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Teaming up with Sonic to save their beloved home from Dr. Eggman's robotic tyranny, Tails' ability to fly made him a crucial ally in the fight against evil.

Tails' design has also evolved with time. From an orange bracelet strapped to his head to keep his tails together in his first appearance, to his sleeker, more aerodynamic design today, his youngest days are a stark contrast to the powerful hero we've come to know and love.

Modern Sonic Characters

Knuckles the Echidna

First appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Knuckles' introduction added a layer of richness to Sonic's world. He wasn't the goodie-goodie sidekick, instead, a complex character with an initial rivalry with Sonic over the Mystic Melodies.

Initially appearing as a ruthless, intimidating force, Knuckles has since mellowed out, blossoming into the canonical, brooding hero we all love and respect.

Amy Rose

A-maniacal personality, Pikachu-like powers, Amy Rose burst into the scene in Sonic the Hedgehog CD. She was Sonic's ally in her debut, later becoming a central character in the Sonic X animation.

Now a fan-favorite, her appropriate depiction in hasn't always been on point. But her fiery personality and loyal nature have made her an undeniable force within Sonic's support system.
