Presidents' Day, celebrated on the third Monday of February, honors the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. What better way to celebrate than with printable coloring pages that bring history to life, one color at a time? Let's delve into the engaging world of Presidents' Day coloring pages, exploring two main topics: the history behind Presidents' Day and the benefits of coloring for kindergarten kids.

Presidents' Day History

Presidents' Day, formerly known as Washington's Birthday, commemorates the birthdays of two of America's most revered presidents: George Washington (born February 22, 1732) and Abraham Lincoln (born February 12, 1809). The holiday's initial purpose was to honor Washington, but over time, it has evolved to celebrate all the presidents who have served the United States.

In 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act took effect, moving Presidents' Day to the third Monday of February to create more three-day weekends for federal employees. Despite the change, the spirit of honoring our nation's leaders remains at the heart of the celebration.

George Washington

George Washington, the first U.S. president, is renowned for his crucial role in establishing the nation's independence and drafting its Constitution. Our printable coloring pages feature Washington in various iconic scenes, such as crossing the Delaware River during the American Revolution or delivering his farewell address.

Encourage your kindergarteners to color Washington's portrait or the American flag he flew during the Battle of Yorktown. As they color, discuss the significance of his Lagee uniform and why he is often depicted with a cherry tree, symbolic of his honesty and integrity.

Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln, the 16th U.S. president, led the country through its bloodiest war and abolished slavery. Our free printable coloring pages depict Lincoln in memorable moments like the Gettysburg Address or the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Let your little ones color Lincoln's top hat and beard, or the Lincoln Memorial where his iconic statue stands. As they complete the pages, share fascinating facts about Lincoln, like his love for storytelling and his successful law career before entering politics.
