How to Add Page Number X of Y in Word
Do you need to indicate the page number in your Microsoft Word document? Whether you're writing a report, a thesis, or a long document, including page numbers can help readers navigate through your content easily. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to add "Page X of Y" in Word.
Before we dive into the process, make sure you've enabled continuous page numbering. This ensures that the page numbers are consistent throughout your document. Here's how you can do it:
Enabling Continuous Page Numbering
First, access the page setup settings. Click on "File" then "Options" and select "Page Layout". Under "Section start", choose "Different first page". In the "Header" section, click on "Edit Header". In the header, place your cursor where you want the page number to appear, then click on the "Page Number" dropdown in the "Header & Footer Tools" menu. Select "Format Page Numbers". In the "Page Number Format" dialog box, under "Numbering", click on "Continue from previous section". Click "OK" to close the dialog box and "X" to close the header editing tools.
Now that you've enabled continuous page numbering, let's proceed to adding "Page X of Y".
Adding "Page X of Y" in Word
To add "Page X of Y", you'll need to use the Word Equation feature. This feature allows you to insert mathematical and other special symbols into your document. Here's how you can use it:
Step 1: Insert the Equation Tool
Place your cursor in the header where you want "Page X of Y" to appear. Click on the "Developer" tab. If you don't see this tab, go to "File" then "Options", click on "Customize Ribbon", and check the box next to "Developer". In the " Controls" section, click on the "More Controls" dropdown and select "Equation 3.0". Click and drag to draw the equation tool in your header.
Step 2: Add the Page Number Formula
In the Equation Tools menu, click on "Insert" then "Symbol". Under "Symbols", click on "Miscellaneous" and select the page number symbol. Click "Insert". Next, click on "Structured Equation Tools" then "Operators", and select the "thirteenth root" symbol (∛). Click "Insert". In the equation tool, you should now have the page number symbol followed by ∛. Right-click on the second symbol and select "Delete". You should now have "PAGE X ∛ Y" in the equation tool. This will represent "PAGE X of Y".
Unfortunately, Word does not automatically update the "Page X of Y" text as you change the page number. However, you can manually update the page number if needed. Just replace the "X" in the equation tool with the new page number.
Remember to keep your document organized by using styles, headings, and tables of contents. This can make your document easier to navigate and read. Also, always proofread your document to ensure there are no errors. Happy writing!
