DIY Paper Ninja Stars for Kids: Easy and Safe Craft
Have you ever wanted to craft your own ninja star? While ninja stars, or shuriken, are traditionally made of metal, we're going to show you how to make a fun and safe paper version for kids. This activity is great for teaching children about origami and prompts creative play. So, grab some paper and get ready to channel your inner ninja!
Paper ninja stars are not only fun to make but also make wonderful party favors or decorations. They're easy and quick to create, making them perfect for craft time or a rainy day activity. Let's dive into the steps to create your own paper ninja star masterpiece.
Understanding the Basics
Before we start, let's talk about what a ninja star is and its history. A ninja star, or shuriken, is a concealed bladed weapon used for throwing. The exact origin is unclear, but they were used by shinobi, or ninjas, in feudal Japan for various purposes, including combat and diversionary tactics.
Our paper version won't be used for combat but for fun crafts and learning! Now that you know a bit more about the history let's dive into the exciting part: making your own!
Gather Your Materials
Creating a paper ninja star is simple, requiring just a few materials:
- Paper (standard printer paper works great)
- Scissors
- optional: Markers or colored pencils for decoration
Start with a Square
Begin by folded a piece of paper in half diagonally to form a triangle. Then, fold the triangle in half again to create an even smaller triangle. Unfold the last fold, so you're back to the first triangle. Now, you should have a square with a crease down the middle.
Folding the paper like this helps create the star's shape. In the next steps, we'll use this crease to guide our cuts and folds.
Creating the Star's Points
Now that we have the base shape, let's create the points of our ninja star. Follow along with the steps below:
Make the First Cut
With the crease down the middle, fold the top two corners of the triangle down to the midpoint of the base. This should create a small kite shape.
Next, cut off the top tip of the kite, about 1/4 inch from the top. This will give you a shorter, wider shape that resembles a small banner.
Repeat and Fold
Now, take the bottom two corners and fold them up to meet the top of the shape you just created. You should have six points at the top now.
With the six points at the top, fold each one down to the bottom, as if you're making a crease toward the center. Keep the points folded as you follow the next step.
Forming the Star
We're almost there! The final steps will reveal your paper ninja star.
Open Up the Sides
Unfold each of the points you just created. You should now see a star shape emerging. Because of the way we've creased and cut the paper, opening up these points will reveal four or five-pointed star.
Press down on the center to force the star's points outwards. You can also gently pull on the edges to help define the star's points.
Decorate Your Star
Now comes the fun part: decorating your paper ninja star! You can color it, draw designs, or even write your name on it.
Once you're done decorating, your very own ninja star is ready! Be careful when handling, as paper can still cause injuries when thrown. Always supervise children during play.
Now that you've learned how to make a paper ninja star, why not try making a whole bunch to decorate your room or give as gifts? Happy crafting, and remember, true ninjas use their stars for fun and creativity!
