Lip Gloss Slime No Glue: Easy DIY Tutorial
Children and adults alike have become smitten with the squishy, stretchy fun of slime. While the internet is flooded with recipes for this silicone polymer sensation, many require standard white glue, which can be hard to come by or messy to work with. Have no fear! If you have a stash of lip gloss and other common household items, you can create your own lip gloss slime at home.
Why use lip gloss to make slime? Lip gloss contains an ingredients called PVP (polyvinylpyrrolidone) which is a boron-crosslinking activator, similar to the boron and PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) found in glue. This means it can activate the borax in our recipe to create a silicone polymer chain, creating our slime.
Gathering Ingredients and Tools
Making slime with lip gloss is surprisingly simple. You probably already have most, if not all, of the necessary materials in your home. Here's what you'll need:
The full recipe includes about 2 hours of fun and makes enough slime for multiple playtimes. Safety first - always supervise children around substances and ensure everyone washes their hands before and after playing with slime.
Selecting the Right Lip Gloss
Lip gloss slime works best with clear, tacky lip gloss. Avoid lip glosses with glitter or other thickeners as these may affect the consistency of your slime.
Some popular brands that work well include: Rimmel London's The Only 1 Lipstick, L'OrΓ©al Paris' Infallible Lip Glosses, and NYX Professional Makeup's Butter Lip Gloss. Remember, the more lip gloss you use, the more slime you'll make!
Precautions and Safety Tips
Before you begin, it's crucial to understand that borax is an irritant. While legion about its uses in slime, ensure it's handled with care, especially around children and pets.
To do this, consider wearing gloves and working in a well-ventilated area. Always rinse your hands thoroughly with warm water after handling borax. Keep borax and borax solutions away from children and pets.
Preparing a Dilute Borax Solution
A key component of our lip gloss slime is a dilute borax solution. Borax on its own is dangerous. We're diluting it to safe levels. Remember, safety first!
Mix 1 teaspoon of borax into 1 cup (8 ounces or 237 ml) of room temperature water. Stir until the borax is fully dissolved. You might need to squish the borax against the side of the cup with a spoon. Once it's dissolved, set it aside.
Mixing Your Lip Gloss and Saline Solution
Now it's time to make your activator! Mix together 10-15 drops of contact solution ( Ensure it has sodium borate or boric acid to work with borax) with 1 tablespoon of your chosen lip gloss in a separate container.
The contact solution you add helps to activate the PVP in the lip gloss. If your contact solution contains a preservative other than boric acid or sodium borate, it won't work. Check the ingredient list or contact the manufacturer to ensure it's compatible.
Creating Your Lip Gloss Slime
Finally, the moment you've been waiting for - creating your slime! Start by squeezing half of your lip gloss and contact solution mixture into the borax and water solution. Gently stir until it starts to come together and form a slimy texture.
Slime is at its best when it's neither too sticky nor too hard. If the slime is too sticky or hard, add a bit more borax in one-quarter teaspoon increments. If it's too firm, drop in a bit more of your lip gloss and contact solution mixture. Once you're happy with your slime's texture, remove it with your hands (rinse well after handling) or a spoon and enjoy!
Storing Your Lip Gloss Slime
Keep your slime fresh by storing it in an airtight container when not in use. Avoid moisture. Ideally, keep it in a cool place, away from direct sunlight. Your lip gloss slime should keep well for several weeks with proper care.
Don't forget, as fun as slime is, it's not edible! So, please keep it away from mouths and avoid playing with it if you're prone to allergies to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
Now, go forth and create! With just a few safety precautions and a little bit of patience, you and your loved ones can enjoy the satisfaction and squishy delight of homemade lip gloss slime. Happy creating!
