Inko Midoriya's Eye Color in My Hero Academia

By David ClarkJanuary 2, 2026

Midway through the popular manga and anime series "My Hero Academia", a pivotal change occurs in the appearance of its protagonist, Izuku Midoriya. This transformation is marked by a significant alteration in his eye color, captivating fans and sparking numerous discussions online. Let's delve into the intricacies of Inko Midoriya's eye color change and its significance in the narrative.

In the initial chapters of the series, Inko Midoriya, also known as Deku, is introduced with green eyes, a reflection of his ordinary life and lack of Quirks—special powers that make up the superhero world of his dreams. This humble beginnings trope is a common one in shonen manga, serving as a foundation for the hero's journey.

The Power of One for All

Everything changes for Deku when he meets his hero, All Might, and receives the power of One For All, a legacy Quirk. This power comes with its own set of challenges, including the necessity to control its immense strength and the devastating effects of its use.

As Deku grows more proficient in wielding One For All, his eyes begin to change. This visual alteration signifies not just a physical transformation, but also a metaphorical one, representing the evolution of Deku's character and his acceptance of his newfound power.

From Green to Crimson

After some time training with All Might, Deku's eyes shift from their original green hue to a vivid crimson. This change is first noticed by fans upon his return to U.A. High School, leaving many to question the reason behind this transformation. The vivid color of Deku's new eye color implies a fierce power, one that matches the intensity and passion he brings to his heroics.

Some fans have speculated that the red eyes represent the side effects of using One For All, such as the potential to go into Super Move mode without intending to. Others interpret it as a visual representation of Deku's determination and willpower, qualities that have been central to his character since the beginning. Whatever the case may be, the shift in eye color undeniably contributes to the visual appeal and storytelling of the series.

The Evolution of Deku's Eyes

As the story progresses, Deku's eye color continues to evolve. When he uses One For All to its fullest extent, his eyes turn a fiery crimson, with pupils resembling those of a cat. This change, known as "Smile" by fans, reflects the heightened power and sensation Deku experiences while using One For All at its maximum capacity.

Moreover, when Deku unlocks the Full Cowling state, a more controlled and powerful form of One For All, his eyes change again. This time, they take on a unique, round pupil shape, distinct from the cat-like "Smile". This visual cue helps readers identify when Deku has accessed this higher level of power, adding another layer to the story's continuity.

The Impact on Fans and Theories

The color of Deku's eyes has become a popular topic among fans. Despite the canonical explanation for the change remaining vague, theories abound, ranging from the mundane—such as the eyes being a result of using a powerful Quirk—to the more complex—like them being a manifestation of Deku's mental state or a hint towards his lineage.

Whatever the truth behind the change, there's no denying that it serves as a notable visual cue for readers and viewers, signaling important moments in Deku's journey. This change, much like many aspects of "My Hero Academia", is not merely superficial but laden with symbolism and theoretical depth, engaging fans and encouraging speculation.

Some fans have even gone as far as to create massive, detailed analyses on the potential meanings behind the change in Deku's eye color. These discussions, found on platforms like Reddit and Tumblr, often delve into the deeper symbolism of the transformation, tying it into broader themes of the series, such as the psychology of Quirk users or the nature of heroism.

While these discussions are largely speculative, they showcase the profound impact that even minor visual details—such as a character's eye color—can have on a dedicated fanbase. This interaction and engagement are a testament to the storytelling prowess of "My Hero Academia" and its creator, Kōhei Horikoshi.

Manga vs Anime: A Shift in Focus

It's worth noting that the change in Deku's eye color is more prominent in the anime adaptation of "My Hero Academia" than in the original manga. In the anime, the color shift is often emphasized with dramatic visual effects, drawing attention to the transformation. This serves to enhance the emotional impact of these moments for viewers.

On the other hand, the manga's style of storytelling places more emphasis on dialogue and narrative structure, often downplaying visual flair. This difference in approach highlights how different mediums can interpret and emphasize different aspects of a story, each providing a unique way for audiences to engage with the material.

In the end, the eye color change in Inko Midoriya is more than just a cosmetic alteration—it's a visual assistant of his transformation into a hero, showcasing his growth and evolution. As the series continues to unfold, fans eagerly await the next significant change in Deku's appearance, ready to analyze and interpret its potential meanings. After all, the journey of our heroes is never just skin deep.
