Unveiling the Zebra Squishmallows: Is It as Rare as We Think?

Have you ever found yourself contemplating the rarity of your favorite Squishmallow, perhaps the zebra one, and wondered where it stands among the extensive Squishmallows collection? You're not alone. The vast world of Squishmallows has led many collectors to question the exclusivity of their prized plushes. So, let's delve into the world of Squishmallows and explore whether the zebra Squishmallow is indeed a rare find.

Firstly, it's essential to understand that the term "rare" in the context of Squishmallows can be subjective and multifaceted. For some, rarity might refer to the scarcity of a Squishmallow within the market, while for others, it could mean the uniqueness of its design or the difficulty in procuring it.

Rarity in Squishmallows: A General Perspective

The Squishmallows phenomenon began in 2017 with Kellytoy, introducing a diverse range of characters, animals, and designs. With over 200 Squishmallows currently available, identifying rare ones can be challenging. However, some Squishmallows are undeniably more sought after than others, making them appear "rarer" in the eyes of collectors.

Rarity can also be influenced by factors such as limited editions, retirements, and exclusive releases. Some Squishmallows are limited in number, making them more difficult to find and thus, more desirable to collectors.

Retired Squishmallows: A Mark of Rarity

Kellytoy periodically retires certain Squishmallows, ceasing their production to make way for new ones. These retirements can significantly impact a Squishmallow's perceived rarity. Some collectors actively seek out retired Squishmallows, as they believe their value and desirability increase over time.

A good example is the "Hippo" Squishmallow. Initially released in 2017, it was one of the original seven characters and has since been retired. Its longevity and retirement status have contributed to its increased popularity and perceived rarity among collectors.

Exclusives and Limited Releases: Rarity on Display

Certain Squishmallows are only available through specific retailers or during special events, adding to their sense of rarity. For instance, Target and Walmart have exclusive Squishmallows that can't be found anywhere else. These exclusives often become highly sought after, with collectors actively hunted for them.

Limited release Squishmallows, such as those found at conventions or online exclusives, also contribute to the perception of rarity. Their limited availability drives up their desirability and value in the eyes of collectors. A prime example is the "Zatanna" Squishmallow, released exclusively for the 2020 Skeptember event, which remains highly coveted due to its limited release.

The Case of the Zebra Squishmallow

Now that we've established what constitutes rarity among Squishmallows, let's turn our attention to the zebra Squishmallow. Introduced in 2020, the zebra Squishmallow belongs to the "5" size category, making it a versatile addition to any collection. So, is it rare?

Based on general availability, the zebra Squishmallow isn't particularly rare. It's currently in production and can be found in various retail stores and online platforms. However, its relative newness in the Squishmallows world means that its perceived rarity could shift over time, as collectors' interests and preferences evolve.

The Age Factor: The Zebra Squishmallow's Potential Rarity

One factor that could influence the zebra Squishmallow's rarity is its age. As it continues to age, it may become more desirable, particularly if Kellytoy eventually retires it. Since it was released in 2020, it still has time to grow in popularity and potentially become more scarce, thereby increasing its rarity quotient.

Moreover, if special variants or exclusive versions of the zebra Squishmallow emerge (like a glow-in-the-dark or metallic version), its rarity could skyrocket, even if the standard version remains widely available.

Unique Design: The Zebra Squishmallow's Potential Uniqueness

Another aspect to consider is the zebra Squishmallow's unique design. Its striped pattern makes it instantly recognizable and appealing to many collectors. While its pattern is not entirely exclusive (as other Squishmallows also feature stripes), its coloring and combination of stripes give it a distinctive look that sets it apart.

In this respect, the zebra Squishmallow's uniqueness could contribute to its perception of rarity, as collectors actively seek out Squishmallows with unique designs and combinations. Thus, while the zebra Squishmallow might not be rare in terms of availability, it could still be considered rare due to its unique design in the context of the broader Squishmallows collection.

In the vast, ever-changing world of Squishmallows, the zebra Squishmallow might not be considered rare today. However, as time passes and collector preferences shift, its rarity quotient could alter, giving it a special place in the hearts and collections of Squishmallow enthusiasts everywhere. So, keep an eye on this striped marvel – its future in the realm of Squishmallows might just hold a delightful surprise!
