Understanding the Scene: Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane

After the Last Supper, Jesus and his disciples went to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. Here, Jesus took Peter, James, and John with him, asking them to stay awake and keep watch while he went a little farther to pray. The emotional turmoil he faced is vividly depicted in the Gospel of Matthew (26:36-44), where we read that Jesus was "overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death," and he sought solace in prayer.

This touching scene underscores the human side of Jesus, showing that even he, the Son of God, needed to pour out his heart to his Father in times of distress. It serves as a powerful reminder of the importance and efficacy of prayer in our own lives.

The Three Aspects of Jesus' Prayer

To better understand Jesus' prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, it helps to examine the three petitions he made to his Father. Firstly, he asked if it were possible for the cup of sufferings to pass from him. Secondly, he asked that this be done, not his will, but the will of the Father. Lastly, in his final petition, he reiterated his submission to God's will, saying, "Not my will, but yours be done."

By unpacking these petitions, we attain a deeper insight into Jesus' experience of humanity and his unwavering trust in his Father's will. Our coloring page is a tangible reminder of Jesus' example of prayer, offering us a moment to pause, reflect, and connect with our own Father through prayer.
