Gather Your Materials

Before you begin, ensure you have all the necessary materials on hand. You'll need:

• Cotton cord or yarn in the desired color(s) (avoid wool as it's harder to work with)
• Scissors
• Tape or a clip to secure your work in progress
• An embroidery needle (optional, for weeding)

For this tutorial, we'll use four 2-yard lengths of cord cut in half, resulting in eight 1-yard pieces. This tutorial also assumes you have some basic macrame skills. If not, start with watching some simple macrame knot tutorials to get the hang of it.

Prepare Your Macrame Cord

First, take two of the eight twisted cords and form a lark's head knot by folding them in half, placing the folded ends on a flat surface, and letting the loose ends hang down.

Bring the loose ends over the folded cords and pull the folded ends through the loop. Tighten the knot by pulling the loose ends away from the loop. This will be the starting point for your macrame butterfly.

Create the Butterfly's Body

Now, it's time to start with the basic macrame knots that will form the butterfly's body. You'll be using a square knot, which is a combination of a right-over-left half hitch and a left-over-right half hitch.

To create a square knot, take the left cord (when looking from the top) and make a right-over-left half hitch. Then, take the right cord and make a left-over-right half hitch. Repeat this process until you've reached the desired length for the butterfly's body. For our tutorial, we've made 6 square knots.

Form the Butterfly's Wings

Once you've completed the body, it's time to create the butterfly's delicate wings. For this, we'll use runner's knots, which are essentially multiple square knots stacked upon each other.

Take one cord from the front and one from the back, and tie a square knot at the top, about 3 inches below the body. Then, take the same two cords again and tie another square knot directly below the first one. Repeat this process twice more, tying four sets of square knots in total. These will form the two sets of wings for your macrame butterfly.

Add Details and Finishing Touches

To give your butterfly some extra charm, you can add a half hitch knot at each of the wing's tips. Take one cord from the front and one from the back, and tie a half hitch knot at the very edge of the wing. Repeat this process for all eight tips.

To create a loop for the keychain, take the top two cords (from the butterfly's head) and tie them together in a lark's head knot. Trim any uneven ends, and tidy up your work.

Weaving (Optional)

For an added touch of texture, you can weave the loose ends of the cords into the body of the butterfly. Using an embroidery needle, thread one end in and out of the macrame knots, pulling it tight after each pass. Repeat this process with each loose end until they're all woven in.
