AD

Imagine a warm, bustling kitchen in a small village. Two women, Mary and Martha, are busy preparing a meal. Suddenly, there's a knock at the door. It's Jesus! He's traveled far and is tired and hungry. The women are overjoyed to see him and invite him in.

In this story from the Bible, we learn about two sisters, Mary and Martha, and how they reacted differently when Jesus visited their home. Let's dive into this heartwarming tale and discover the beautiful lessons it holds for us.

Mary Chooses to Listen

After welcoming Jesus, Martha immediately rushed to prepare a meal. Meanwhile, Mary sat beside Jesus and listened to him teach. She was so captivated by his words that she didn't want to leave his side.

In those days, it was unusual for a woman to sit and listen to a teacher, especially in the presence of men. But Mary knew the precious opportunity she had, and she seized it. She chose to prioritize learning from Jesus over her daily chores.

Mary's Example of Focus

Mary's actions teach us the importance of focusing on what truly matters. Just like she chose to listen to Jesus, we should strive to make time for God and His word in our busy lives. It's okay to say 'no' to distractions and responsibilities sometimes, to prioritize our spiritual growth.

Mary's Reward of Peace

Martha, seeing Mary sit and listen instead of helping, felt upset and burdened. She complained to Jesus, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do all the work myself? Tell her to help me." But Jesus had something beautiful to say.

"Martha, my dear friend," Jesus replied, "you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, and it will not be taken away from her." Jesus praised Mary for choosing to relax and learn from him. He taught us that seeking peace and quiet before God is a valuable choice.

Martha Learns about Balance

Martha was much like many of us today - bustling and busy, trying to do everything at once. She forgot to prioritize her relationship with Jesus while being caught up in her tasks. But Jesus didn't condemn her busywork; instead, he offered her a lesson in balance.

After assuring Martha that Mary had made the right choice, Jesus didn't ask Martha to stop her work entirely. Instead, he taught her about balance - that it's crucial to take time out from our chores and responsibilities to sit at Jesus' feet, just like Mary had done.

Martha's Lesson in Balance

Jesus' words to Martha teach us that neither lounging about nor working too much is ideal. Instead, we should strive for balance - to work diligently but also make time to rest and grow in our faith. Just like Martha, we too can learn from our mistakes and find balance in our lives.

Now, imagine your daily to-do list. Which tasks can you pursue with diligence, and which might you need to delegate or let go of, so you can spend more quality time with God? This is the beautiful balance Jesus wants us to strive for.

Jesus Teaches Us Hospitality

Throughout this story, we also see Jesus model wonderful hospitality. He didn't criticize Martha's eagerness to serve but instead praised her for welcoming him into her home. This teaches us about the importance of showing kindness and love to those around us, especially guests and visitors.

AD

Jesus also teaches us to be open and humble, like he was with Mary and Martha. He didn't impose his will or expectations but allowed each to respond in their own way. This is a beautiful example of how we should interact with others.

Showing Hospitality to Others

Jesus' example encourages us to show hospitality to others, just like Mary and Martha did. Whether it's opening our homes to family and friends or inviting a new neighbor over, we can follow Jesus' example and offer warm, inviting spaces where others feel welcomed and loved.

Think about the people in your life. How can you show them hospitality, just as Jesus did with Mary and Martha? It could be something as simple as inviting a friend over for a meal or listening to their story with genuine interest.

So, when you think about Mary and Martha with Jesus, remember that it's not about deciding who was right or wrong. Jesus loved and valued both sisters, just as he loves and values each one of us. This story invites us to consider our own priorities and encourages us to create a life that balances work, rest, and time spent with Jesus.
