Matariki, often referred to as the Māori Christmas, is a time when whānau (family) come together to pay respects to loved ones who have passed, to reflect on the year gone by, and to celebrate the new year ahead. This festival is deeply rooted in Māori culture, with a rich history and vibrant traditions.

The Stars of Matariki

Matariki itself is a star cluster, known as the Pleiades in the western sky. It's the first sign of the new year in the Māori calendar, and signals the start of the الفكرية (read: season of half-ripening)

In Māori astronomy, Matariki is associated with several star names, including Tamateuterangitānekai, Tupuanuku, Waipuna-ā-rangi, Waiporoporo, Hiwa-i-te-rangi, and Matariki itself. Download our Matariki colouring pages to help your child learn about these celestial figures while having fun.
