Memorial Day Ribbon Colors: A Guide

By Sarah MillerFebruary 5, 2026

Every year, on the last Monday of May, America honors and remembers its fallen military personnel on Memorial Day. This somber yet poignant occasion is marked by various symbols, one of the most recognizable being the Memorial Day ribbon. But what do the colors of this ribbon signify, and how did this tradition begin?

The Memorial Day ribbon, also known as the Poppy or Purple Heart ribbon, is a symbol of remembrance accompanied by a powerful history that dates back to World War I. The ribbon's color, typically worn throughout the month of May, is a vibrant red – a hue so profound it demands attention and reflection.

The Significance of the Red Color

The red color of the Memorial Day ribbon holds immense symbolic value. It embodies the blood shed by military personnel in defense of their country and represents the ultimate sacrifice made by those who never returned home.

Moreover, red symbolizes the resilience and determination of those who continue to serve and protect our nation, both at home and abroad.

Lest We Forget: The Poppy Legacy

The origins of the Memorial Day ribbon trace back to the poem "In Flanders Fields," written by Canadian physician Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae after witnessing the extensive damage and loss of life in the Second Battle of Ypres. The poem immortalized the memorable sight of poppies blooming amidst the devastation, leading to the adoption of the poppy as a symbol of remembrance.

The Purple Heart and Its Connection

The Purple Heart, America's oldest military decoration, shares a historic connection with the Memorial Day ribbon. Initially established by General George Washington in 1782 as the Badge of Military Merit, it was re-instituted in 1932 by the newly established Purple Heart Association.

While the Purple Heart is awarded to military personnel injured or killed in action, its color shares an electrolytic link with the Memorial Day ribbon. The purple hue, signifying courage and sacrifice, serves as a timely reminder of the heroes who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

The Evolution of the Memorial Day Ribbon

The Memorial Day ribbon, albeit deeply rooted in tradition, has evolved over the years. Today, it's not merely a red poppy pin but often features a simple white forget-me-not flower in the center, symbolizing the pure innocence and youth of the lives lost.

Another common variant is the Buddy Poppy, which displays two poppies joined together to symbolize the unbreakable bond between soldiers who fought side by side, one of whom may have made the ultimate sacrifice.

The Role of Charitable Organizations

Numerous veteran-focused charitable organizations, such as the American Legion and VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars), play a significant role in distributing Memorial Day ribbons and educating the public about their symbolism. Their efforts ensure that the meaning behind the ribbon remains at the forefront of public awareness.

These organizations often sell poppy flowers and collect donations to support veterans, their families, and communities. The funds raised help provide essential services like housing, employment, and rehabilitation programs for those who have served our country.

As we don our red ribbons each May, let us not forget the profound impact that these symbols have on our collective memory. The spirit behind the Memorial Day ribbon serves as a clarion call to honor, respect, and remember the legacies of those who have given their all. Wear your ribbon proudly, not just as a fashion statement, but as a testament to the brave souls who have sacrificed their tomorrows so that we may live freely today.
