Best Picture of 2023 - Number One Contender

Ever found yourself asking, "What's the number one picture on the internet?" You're not alone. In the digital age, images have become a universal language, capturing our attention and conveying information at a glance. But how do we define 'number one' in this context? Today, we're exploring this intriguing concept and demystifying the top spot in the digital image universe.

Before we dive in, let's set some ground rules. We're interested in pictures that have made a significant impact, not necessarily the most viewed or shared. We're looking for images that have started conversations, sparked trends, or even caused significant change. So, buckle up as we embark on this visual journey to find the number one picture online.

The Power of Memes

No discussion about popular internet images would be complete without mentioning memes. Memes transcend language barriers, becoming instant hits and cultural phenomena. Let's explore two of the most impactful.

The 'Success Kid' meme, originating from a photo of a determined baby, represents ambition and triumph. It's been used in numerous campaigns, including NASA's mission patch for the Curiosity Rover.

Distracted Boyfriend

The 'Distracted Boyfriend' meme hails from a stock photo of a man gazing at another woman while his girlfriend looks on. Its popularity lies in its versatility, making it a favorite in marketing and social commentary.

But perhaps no meme is more pervasive than the 'This is fine' dog. Created by KC Green for a web comic, its image of a dog nonchalantly sitting in a burning room, laughing it off, has become a symbol of larping in the face of impending doom.

Iconic Photographs

Beyond memes, certain photographs hold immense power and influence.

The 'Photoshop Disaster' compilation is a curious case. It wasn't one photograph but numerous images showing off poor Photoshop edits. Still, its impact can't be understated, as it exposed common Photoshop mishaps and has kept designers on their toes ever since.

Flower Girl

Barron Claiborne's 'Flower Girl' photograph of a young girl holding a gun with flowers blooming from it is another powerful image. It encapsulates the juxtaposition of violence and beauty, sparking conversations about femininity, power, and social issues.

And let's not forget 'The Brady Bunch' staircase image. Despite being reimagined countless times, it's the original image that remains iconic, bridging the gap between homey nostalgia and viral humor.

Viral Art: 'Distracted Black Girl'

Lastly, let's acknowledge 'Distracted Boyfriend's' social counterpart, 'Distracted Black Girl' by Taylor Jones. This digital art representation sparked conversations about race, representation, and meme culture.

In a world married to images, these pictures stand out. They've influenced our culture, challenged norms, and left indelible marks on our collective consciousness. Whether for their humor, power, or influence, they're among the most significant images online.

So, what's the 'number one picture?' It's complex to define with myriad factors at play—view count, influence, popularity—but one thing's for certain: these images have shaped the internet, each in their unique way. As we continue to evolve and our digital world expands, only time will tell what image will next capture the internet's collective imagination.
