Palm Sunday Kindergarten Lesson Plan
Welcome to Palm Sunday, a wonderful and meaningful celebration that marks the beginning of Holy Week in the Christian calendar. This special day is an excellent opportunity to introduce your kindergarten-aged children to the significance of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, and to help them understand the true meaning of Easter.
Palm Sunday is a fun and interactive way to teach young children about Jesus' love and sacrifice. With its lively parade, palm branches, and colorful crafts, it's a day filled with joy and learning. Let's dive into this year's Palm Sunday lesson, designed especially for your little ones.
Understanding Palm Sunday
Palm Sunday commemorates the day when Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, symbolizing peace and humility. The crowd welcomed Him, laying down palm branches and their cloaks on the road, and shouting "Hosanna!" which means "save now".
To make this story relatable to your kindergarteners, you can explain that 'Hosanna' is like their excited cheer when they see their favorite princess or hero come into their kingdom. It's a celebration of love and respect.
The Palm Branches
Palm branches were a symbol of victory and peace in the time of Jesus. The crowd waved them to honor Him as their King and to celebrate His arrival. In class, you can create palm branches using construction paper or have the children color themed pictures of palm trees.
You can also explain that just like the crowd, we too can show our love and respect for Jesus by participating in the Palm Sunday procession, waving our palm branches high, and singing songs to praise Him.
The Parade
On Palm Sunday, churches often hold a procession where everyone gathers outside and walks around the block, waving their palm branches and singing hymns. This replicates the original parade where people welcomed Jesus into Jerusalem.
For your kindergarten lesson, you can organize a mini-parade within your classroom or play area. Assign each child a simple role - perhaps they can be part of the crowd, or even dress up as Jesus, a disciple, or a palm tree. Encourage them to wave their palm branches, sing songs like "Hosanna in the Highest", and cheer for Jesus.
Jesus' Love and Sacrifice
Palm Sunday also marks the beginning of Jesus' journey towards the cross. It's a powerful message of love and sacrifice, showing that even though He knew what was coming, He willingly went forward to save us all.
For young children, it might be too early to discuss the crucifixion in detail, but you can highlight Jesus' love and willingness to help others. You can relate it to how they love their family and friends, and would want to help them if they're in trouble. This also leads nicely into Easter's celebration of new life and hope.
Activity: Jesus' Love Heart
Draw a large heart shape on a piece of paper. Ask each child to think of something they love about Jesus, like how He teaches us to love one another or how He helps those in need. They can then write or draw their answer inside the heart.
Once everyone has filled their hearts, you can share some of the answers together. Then, glue all the hearts onto a large poster to create a beautiful 'Jesus' Love Heart' collage, reminding the children that even though Jesus is not physically with us, His love is always present.
As we conclude our Palm Sunday lesson, let's remember that Jesus loved us so much that He let us honor Him, just like the crowd did on that first Palm Sunday. Next time, we'll talk about how Jesus' love story continued and how Easter celebrated His triumph over darkness. In the meantime, let's keep celebrating Jesus' love in our hearts, just like our 'Jesus' Love Heart' collage.
