Ever since Sesame Street first aired in 1969, its beloved characters have captured the hearts of millions. Among them is Oscar the Grouch, a green, three-bulb-eyed, waste-loving creature who resides in a trash can. But who exactly is Oscar the Grouch, and why has he become such a popular figure in children's television?

Oscar the Grouch, full name Oscar Al Grouch, is a Muppet character performed by puppeteer Caroll Spinney. He was added to the Sesame Street cast in 1969, alongside Big Bird, Bert, and Ernie. Oscar is unique among the Sesame Street residents, as he doesn't live in a house or an apartment, but instead makes his home in a trash can, which he lovingly refers to as his 'can.'

Oscar's appearance and personality

Oscar is recognized by his distinctive green fur, three large, yellow, orange-rimmed eyes, and a large, round nose. He has a short, gnarled tail, and his trash can home, which he often refers to as his 'castle,' is said to be located in the 'Grouchland' neighborhood of Sesame Street.

Despite his appearance and his affection for trash, Oscar is often shown as being very clean and particular about his personal hygiene. He admits to being a 'slightly above average' opponent of trash, preferring only clean, recyclable materials. His personality is cranky and grumpy, but also good-natured, always ready with a comment or a song.

Oscar's songs and love for trash

One of Oscar's most memorable traits is his love for trash and his love of singing about it. He is responsible for many famous songs about trash and his love for it, such as 'I Love Trash,' 'Trash Can Blues,' and 'I've Got A Trash Can,' among others.

These songs not only showcase Oscar's unique sense of humor but also teach valuable lessons about cleanliness and waste management. Oscar's love for trash may seem odd, but it also serves to teach children that it's okay to be different and embrace their unique interests, no matter how unusual they may seem.

Oscar's relationship with Big Bird

One of Oscar's most significant relationships on Sesame Street is with Big Bird. Despite their differences, the two often interact, with Oscar frequently teasing Big Bird or trying to get him to join in his love of trash. However, these interactions also show how Oscar cares for Big Bird and can be quite helpful and considerate towards him.

In one notable instance, Oscar helps Big Bird in ' suiv'And because he hasn't come up with one yet, he uses a calculator. He tries it once, then he rolls it in front of a cross-eyed Telly, and it comes up with a four. He gets it right the first time. He sees it as another sign of his genius, and gloatingly sings, "Anything left over, I'll just donate to a charity that equals zero!"
