Pluto's Kaleidoscopic Image: See Pluto's Color like Never Before

When the New Horizons spacecraft performed its historic flyby of Pluto in July 2015, it beamed back stunning images that shed significant light on our understanding of this tiny, icy world. Among these images was the first colour image of Pluto's surface, painting a vivid picture of its complex and varied terrain.

The colour image, released by NASA, was a composite of four black-and-white images taken by the spacecraft's Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) through different coloured filters. The resulting mosaic showcased Pluto's diverse landscapes in stunning detail, revealing surprisingly Earth-like scenes and dispensing with the simplistic, monochromatic view of the planet mainly held by scientists ever since its discovery in 1930.

The Composition of Pluto's Colour Image

The colour filters used in obtaining the image revealed intriguing details about Pluto's composition and surface processes. For instance, the reddish hue in some areas is attributed to chemicals, such as methane and nitrogen, that have changed colour due to exposure to sunlight over millions of years.

The presence of these complex organic compounds on Pluto's surface has sparked interest among scientists about the potential habitability of this remote world.

Pluto's "Heart" and "Blades" in Colour

The colour image highlighted the famous "heart-shaped" glacier of nitrogen ice known as Tartarus Dorse, plunged within a vast "bladed" terrain likely formed by geological processes similar to frost wedging on Earth. This stark contrast in Pluto's surface features is more apparent in colour, offering a glimpse into the unique geological history of this distant body.

The "blades" - informally dubbed Sputnik Planitia - are thought to have formed about 100,000 years ago when a giant impactor excavated a huge crater. Over time, Pluto's frozen, eccentric atmosphere has grown and thawed over the depression, leaving behind the striking raised ridges that resemble karst terrain found on Earth.

Glaciers, Craters, and Dunes in Vibrant hues

The colour image revealed numerous glaciers and craters, ranges of nitrogen ice mountains and vast plains streaked with reddish hues. Some of these features were seen to protrude from the terreno, while others sunken; a clear indication of the dynamic and varied nature of the dwarf planet's surface.

Meanwhile, bluish hues revealed a series of ice dunes that had formed without the assistance of wind, as occurring elsewhere in the solar system. This phenomenon suggested a unique atmospheric process at play, proving that Pluto has much more to offer in terms of scientific knowledge than initially anticipated.
