Purple Rain Vinyl: Prince's Rare Collectibles & Their Growing Value

The world still mourns the loss of the legendary musician Prince, but his legacy lives on through his iconic album "Purple Rain" and its recent vinyl reissue. With Prince's music seeing a resurgence in popularity, collectors and fans alike are eager to get their hands on this visual and auditory masterpiece, sparking the question: what is the value of "Purple Rain" vinyl?

To determine the value of a "Purple Rain" vinyl, we must first consider its rarity and edition. The album's 2017 reissue on vinyl has reignited interest in Prince's discography, but it's the original 1984 release that commands the highest prices.

Original "Purple Rain" Vinyl Editions

The original "Purple Rain" vinyl releases have seen several pressings worldwide, each influencing its current value. The most valuable is typically the first US pressing, which features a unique gatefold cover and an obi (a Japanese release feature).

Other valuable original pressings include the UK debut, which came with a poster, and the French pressing, known for its alternative tracklist and unique gatefold art.

US First Pressing

The US first pressing is considered the holy grail for "Purple Rain" vinyl collectors. Its value hinges on the condition, with near-mint copies fetching up to $200, while more wear can drop the price to around $50.

Key factors in determining its value include the presence of the obi and original inner sleeve, as well as minimal wear to the vinyl and cover. Even a minor crease or scuff can significantly reduce its value.

International Pressings

International first pressings, such as the UK and French releases, also command high prices due to their rarity and unique features. A UK first press with the original poster can sell for around $100, while the French version might fetch up to $40, depending on its condition.

Other international pressings, like the Canadian and Australian debuts, are less valuable but still sought after by collectors, typically selling for around $20-$50 in good condition.

Reissue and Special Edition Values

While the original pressings hold the most value, recent reissues and special editions also have their appeal, particularly among casual collectors and fans uninterested in tracking down mint-condition originals.

The 2017 color vinyl reissue, featuring rain-soaked purple and clear purple wax, sells for around $30-$50, depending on its condition and whether it's still sealed.

2017 Color Vinyl Reissue

The 2017 color vinyl reissue celebrates the album's 33rd anniversary, with the purple and clear wax designed to mimic a raindrop effect. Despite being a recent release, its value has already begun to climb due to demand and limited availability.

Finally, the world may never forget Prince or the monumental impact of his masterpiece "Purple Rain". Whether you're a seasoned collector or a casual fan, investing in a "Purple Rain" vinyl – original or reissue – is an opportunity to own a piece of musical history. So, dust off your turntable and join the ultimate celebration of Prince's enduring legacy.
