Reindeer Dance Moves: Learn to Jingle Those Hooves

Reindeer dancing, an enchanting spectacle that has captivated audiences worldwide, is a mesmerizing display of grace, precision, and joy. This traditional art form, deeply rooted in the Sámi culture of Northern Europe, celebrates the reindeer, an animal revered for its strength, resilience, and intelligence. Let's delve into the fascinating world of reindeer dancing, exploring its history, its unique relationship with reindeer herders, and its evolution into a global cultural phenomenon.

Reindeer dancing, also known as Sámi duodji, is a unique form of duodji, the Sámi term for handicraft. It is a living expression of the Sámi people's deep connection to nature and their reindeer, reflecting their custom of tending to these animals as sustainers and guides in harsh Arctic conditions.

The Historical Significance of Reindeer Dancing

Reindeer herding has been a central part of Sámi life for thousands of years. Reindeer provided the Sámi with meat, milk, hides for clothing and shelter, and tools. In exchange, the Sámi cared for the reindeer, ensuring their well-being and safe passage through the Arctic landscapes. Reindeer dancing emerged from this symbiotic relationship, serving as a ceremonial ritual to honor and appease the reindeer spirits.

Over time, reindeer dancing evolved into a form of art and entertainment. It became a means for the Sámi to celebrate their culture, share stories, and preserve their unique traditions. Today, reindeer dancing is recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO, a testament to its historical and cultural significance.

Reindeer Training and Handling

Reindeer dancing would not exist without the careful training and handling of reindeer. Unlike other dance forms, reindeer dancers do not merely train the animals to perform. Instead, they foster a relationship based on mutual respect and understanding, using positive reinforcement and patience to teach the reindeer intricate footwork, spins, and formations.

Reindeer are highly intelligent and can learn a repertoire of up to 40 different steps and tricks. They communicate with their human partners through a complex system of vocalizations, body language, and touch. Reindeer handlers use this symbiotic relationship to guide the animals, ensuring a harmonious and cohesive performance.

The Art of Reindeer Costuming and Choreography

Sámi duodji is not just about the reindeer; it's also about the artistry of the human dancers and handlers. Traditional Sámi costumes, characterized by their vibrant colors and intricate patterns, are worn during performances. These costumes not only reflect the Sámi's love for their natural surroundings but also convey their ability to adapt and blend into their environment.

Reindeer dance choreography combines the grace and fluidity of classical dance with the strength and agility required to handle the reindeer. Choreographers draw inspiration from Sámi folklore, reindeer herding traditions, and the natural landscape. The result is a captivating blend of storytelling, music, and movement that reflects the unique bond between the Sámi and their reindeer.
