Mastering Smash Bros: Player Colors

By Michael Martin

In the early days of Smash Bros., players were limited to a bare-bones color palette. The first game in the series, Super Smash Bros. on the Nintendo 64, offered only four colors per character - red, green, blue, and yellow. This was adequate for distinguishing players but left much to be desired in terms of expression and personalization.

Expansion of Color Options

With the release of Super Smash Bros. Melee on the GameCube, Nintendo introduced a vast improvement in player color customization. Each character now had six available colors, including two shades of each primary color and an additional alternate shade. This expansion allowed for more nuanced differentiation among players.

The trend continued with Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the Wii, which provided players with up to seven color options per character. However, it was with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS that the series truly embraced player color customization. Each character now boasted up to eight colors, with some characters even having unique color variants that tied into their lore or design.

White and Black Belts

An interesting aspect of Smash Bros. player colors is the use of white and black belt colors to denote difficulty levels. In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, players could earn these belts by clearing various challenges in the game's event mode. Displaying these belts as their player color was a way for players to showcase their skill and commitment to the game.

In subsequent Smash games, this tradition continued, with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate even featuring a ninth color slot specifically for displaying earned belts. This not only added a layer of personalization but also fostered a sense of community among dedicated Smash players.

SmashHelmet and Color Customization

For those who desired even more control over their character's appearance, the Smash community developed a tool called SmashHelmet. This third-party application allows players to create and apply custom color palettes to their characters, unlocking an almost infinite variety of visual styles.

While not officially supported by Nintendo, SmashHelmet has become an integral part of the Smash Bros. experience for many players. It has enabled competitive players to stand out at tournaments with unique, identifying color schemes, and has contributed to the growth and vibrancy of the Smash community.

Player Colors in Competitive Play

Player colors play a crucial role in competitive Smash Bros. tournaments. With so many characters and player combinations, identifying who's who during a match can be challenging. Distinctive color schemes help both audience members and competitors keep track of players on screen.

In high-level competition, player colors can even influence strategy. Some characters have color variants that affect their appearance but not their moveset. For instance, Fox's white and light blue colors can make his recovery options less obvious to opponents, giving him a potential strategic advantage. Similarly, some players may use disorienting color combinations to throw off opponents or draw attention away from what's truly important.

Stages and Color soʻngontrast

An often-overlooked aspect of Smash Bros. player colors is their interaction with stage design. Certain stages have platforms that blend with specific character colors, making it difficult for opponents to spot hidden or recovering characters. Conversely, strategic use of very contrasting colors can make a character stand out against even the busiest of backdrops.

Some stages, like Battlefield, are designed with color contrast in mind, featuring vibrant hues against neutral tones. This encourages players to choose contrasting colors for their characters, creating a mesmerizing spectacle of fast-paced action and dynamic color play.

In the vast and ever-evolving world of Smash Bros., player colors serve as more than just visual aids. They are a testament to the game's enduring appeal and the creativity of its community. From humble beginnings, they've grown to represent a player's skill, style, and individuality, contributing to the rich tapestry of experiences that make Super Smash Bros. such a beloved series. As the franchise continues to evolve, there's no doubt that player colors will remain an integral part of the Smash Bros. experience.
