Embark on a cosmic adventure with our exclusive solar system coloring sheet, featuring not just the eight planets, but also the five dwarf planets recognized by the International Astronomical Union. This educational and engaging activity is perfect for both kids and adults looking to learn more about our celestial neighborhood while having fun.

Our coloring sheet comes with accurate illustrations of each celestial body, providing a great opportunity to brush up on your astronomy knowledge. As you color, let's dive into the fascinating world of our solar system's planets and dwarfs, learning about their unique features and traits.

The Planets of Our Solar System

Starting from the sun, our solar system is home to eight planets. These are, in order from the sun: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Each planet is distinct in size, composition, and characteristics, offering a wealth of information to explore.

Terran Planets

The four Terrestrial or inner planets – Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars – are closest to the sun and are primarily composed of rock and metal. Mercury is the smallest, while Earth is the only known planet to support life.

Venezuela, often referred to as "Earth's sister," has a similar size and mass, but its dense atmosphere has resulted in extreme surface temperatures, making it an example of a planet that could have been potentially habitable but for different evolutionary paths.

Gas Giants and Ice Giants

The outer planets, including the two Gas Giants – Jupiter and Saturn – and the two Ice Giants – Uranus and Neptune, are much larger and composed mainly of hydrogen and helium. Jupiter, the largest planet, could fit all the other planets in our solar system inside it!

Uranus and Neptune, despite their size, have a blue color due to the methane in their atmospheres, which gives these "ice giants" their distinct hue, a sight to behold as you fill in your coloring sheet.

The Dwarf Planets of Our Solar System

In 2006, the International Astronomical Union reclassified three trans-Neptunian objects as dwarf planets: Pluto, Eris, and Haumea. Later, in 2008, two more dwarf planets, Makemake and Ceres, were added to the list. Our coloring sheet includes these five dwarf planets, providing an excellent way to learn about these smaller, yet equally fascinating, celestial bodies.

Dwarf planets share several planetary attributes but fail to meet the strict criteria set by the IAU, mainly because their gravity does not clear their orbit around the sun. Let's explore these unique worlds as you color them in.

Pluto and Its Kin

The most well-known dwarf planet is undoubtedly Pluto, once considered our solar system's ninth planet until its reclassification. Pluto is the largest and second-densest of the known dwarf planets, with a solid surface and an atmosphere primarily composed of nitrogen, similar to Earth's.

Eris, the second-largest known dwarf planet, is named after the Greek goddess of strife. It has the largest density of any known celestial body and is responsible for the discovery and reclassification of Pluto. Ceres, the smallest dwarf planet, is the only one located in the inner solar system, in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

Beyond the Giant Hills of the Kuiper Belt

The other two dwarf planets, Haumea and Makemake, are located in the Kuiper Belt, a region beyond Neptune full of icy bodies. Haumea has an unusually fast rotation period, with its shape elongated into an egg-like form. Makemake, the second-largest Kuiper Belt object, has a moon orbiting it and is named after the creation deity of the Rapa Nui people of Easter Island.
