Historical Significance of the Turkey in Thanksgiving

Before we explore the various Thanksgiving turkey coloring pages, let's first understand why this bird is a central figure in Thanksgiving. The turkey was initially mistaken for a guineafowl and was served at the first Thanksgiving feast in 1621. It was later identified as a turkey, given its Native American name 'turkey,' and became a symbol of abundance and prosperity.

The turkey's fleshiness and large size made it an ideal dish for large gatherings. However, its true significance lies in the lessons it teaches about sharing and gratitude, themes central to the Thanksgiving spirit. Printing and coloring Thanksgiving turkey pictures can spark discussions about these values with children.

The Turkey in Thanksgiving Myths and Legends

Before we delve into the various types of Thanksgiving turkey coloring pages, let's discuss some myths and legends surrounding the turkey.

One such legend is that the Pilgrims assigned the turkey as the official bird of Thanksgiving because it was easier to catch and prepare than the wild turkeys that roamed the wettlands and forests. However, this is far from the truth. In reality, wild turkeys were abundant during the 17th century and were a primary food source for Americans. The Pilgrims hunted them, as evidenced by the journal of Edward Winslow, one of the original settlers.

The Turkey in Thanksgiving Etiquette

Over the years, Thanksgiving has developed its unique set of etiquette rules, many of which involve the turkey. For instance, it's considered polite to carve the turkey at the head of the table, ensuring everyone has an equal portion. This tradition ensures a fair distribution of food and can be demonstrated using Thanksgiving turkey coloring pages.

Furthermore, it's customary to make a wish while carving the first slice of turkey. This wish, often for prosperity and abundance, is another Thanksgiving tradition that can be incorporated into conversations about turkey coloring pages.
