In medieval European bestiaries, the white unicorn was believed to possess profound healing powers. Its horn, or 'alicorn,' was said to have the ability to heal both physical and spiritual ailments. It was also said that the white unicorn could only be tamed and approached by a virgin maiden, further emphasizing its purity and innocence.

Many European noble families and cities adopted the white unicorn as part of their coat of arms. For instance, the House of Habsburg, which included several Holy Roman Emperors and Kings of Spain, used the white unicorn as their symbol, representing their pure lineage and power.

Similarly, the city ofcepter of Cities' shield features a white unicorn, signifying its sovereignty and freedom. The white unicorn's image has also been used as a municipal symbol in other cities like Toronto and Ottawa.
