The Welsh Dragon, or Y Ddraig Goch, is a symbol of great significance and pride in Wales. It's featured on the national flag and is fiercely protected by the people. By coloring this flag, your children can get a fun, interactive lesson about Welsh culture and history.

Understanding the Welsh Dragon and Its Flag

The Welsh Dragon is one of the few national emblems that isn't based on a historical figure or event. Instead, it's deeply rooted in legend and folklore. According to myth, the dragon battled the attacks of Saxons and Britons, defending the independence of the land. This fierce, proud spirit resonates through the ages, making it a perfect symbol for the Welsh people.

Y Ddraig Goch, meaning "the red dragon," is said to have been forecasted by the prophet Merlin. In the famous tale of King Arthur, Merlin advised Artu to march under the banner of the red dragon to victory. Thus, the red dragon became the symbol of the Welsh, leading them to victory against the English at the Battle of Hafgesau in 1136.

Designing the Welsh Dragon Flag

Y Ddraig Goch flag features a vibrant, emerald green background, symbolizing the lush, rolling hills of Wales. The red dragon, in its center, represents the country's fiery spirit and resilience. Above the dragon, you'll find the words "DEWIS YR ARGLWYDD" (the Prince of Wales) and "PENDRAF YR ALLWYDD" (under the Prince of Wales), symbols of the Welsh royalty.

The three white feathers on the dragon's neck represent the three swords presented to the first Prince of Wales, Owain Gwynedd, by Henry II of England. The flag's design has evolved over centuries, but these core elements have remained constant, reflecting the durability of Welsh identity and heritage.
