What Colors Make Up the American Flag

The cotton banner we so proudly call the American Flag, hasn't always been the red, white, and blue we recognize today. In fact, its color scheme has evolved over time, each shade integral to its rich history. Let's delve into the colors of the American Flag and their significance.

The design, though settled in its current form, hasn't always been the same. It started as a practical necessity, distinguishing American ships from those of other nations. But like the nation it represents, the flag's design has evolved over time, adding and removing stripes and stars as new states joined the Union.

The Birth of the Stars and Stripes

The Continental Congress officially adopted the original design of the American Flag on June 14, 1777. This first version had 13 alternating red and white stripes, representing the 13 original colonies. The blue rectangle in the upper left corner bore a grouping of 13 white stars, symbolizing the 13 original states.

The flag's colors held significant historic and symbolical weight. Red and white were championed by the Flag Resolution Committee, while blue was added at the suggestion of the Committee of the Whole. The colors were also influenced by the British Red, White, and Blue flag, the Grand Union Flag, used by the Continental Navy.

Red, White, and Blue

Red, white, and blue are primary, bold colors that stand out against various backgrounds. In the U.S. Flag, red symbolizes hardiness and valor, white represents purity and innocence, and blue signified vigilance, perseverance, and justice. These colors would change slightly with the introduction of better dying methods in the 19th century, but the symbolic meaning has remained largely the same.

The number of stars, however, has not. Each new state admitted to the Union was represented by the addition of another star on the flag. In 1818, Congress passed the Flag Act, preventing the number of stripes from increasing to accommodate new states, thus settling the design at 13 stripes.

The 50-Star Flag

Over the years, Hawaii, the 50th state, joined the Union in 1959. This marked significant changes in the flag's appearance as it gained another star, but no additional stripes. This current 50-star design is the longest-used version of the flag in U.S. history, having been in service for over 60 years.

The 50 stars don't merely symbolize the 50 states; they also represent the collective unity of these states under one nation, with 13 stripes denoting the original colonies that fought against British rule to birth the United States.

Historical Leaders and Flag Design

Several U.S. Presidents have contributed to the evolution of the flag's design. In 1889, President Benjamin Harrison signed a proclamation establishing official designs for the back of the flag, known as the Great Seal of the United States. Later, President Woodrow Wilson signed the Executive Order 1811, officially establishing the flag's proportions and the 13 stripes' widths.

In 1912, President William Howard Taft publicly superseded the earlier orders by Executive Order 2014, and commissioned a committee to further refine and adopt the flag's specifications. It was decided then that no official proportion for the height and width of the flag could be agreed upon, allowing for various ratios based on their preference and aesthetic.

The surprising, beautiful, yet complex history of the American flag echoes the evolution of the United States itself. Each stripe and star represents the collective triumphs and struggles that have shaped the nation over centuries. As we stand united under one flag today, let's never forget the colors, stories, and sacrifices that weave the fabric of American history.
