What is Mahjongg and Its History

Mahjongg is a tile-based game originating from China, with its earliest recorded version dating back to the 19th century. The game evolved over time, with different variations emerging across differing cultures, including Chinese Classical, Japanese Riichi, and American Contract. WS Mahjongg is based on the American version, also known as NTM (North American Mahjongg), developed by the National Mahjongg League (NML).

The NML introduced standardized rules and scoring for NTM in 1937, significantly contributing to the game's widespread popularity. Today, mahjongg is played in numerous countries worldwide, with established communities in the United States, Canada, Europe, and beyond. The internet has further facilitated this growth, with online platforms like WS Mahjongg catering to an increasingly global player base.

American Contract Mahjongg

American Contract is the variant played on WS Mahjongg, which emphasizes strategy and skill over luck. The game uses a set of 144 unique tiles, including numbers (1-9), suits (characters, bamboos, dots, and winds), and special tiles (dragons and flowers). Players earn points by forming specific combinations, or hands, while adhering to a set of rules and strategies determined by theNational Mahjongg League's rulebook.

Some popular American Contract hands include Seven Pairs, Little Woo, and High Jump. Each hand requires a unique combination of tiles, challenging players to think critically and adapt their strategies based on the tiles they draw and discard. The game's complexity and depth create a compelling and engaging experience for players, with room for both beginners and experts to grow and improve.
